I often have a large number of people asking, and assuming (because I'm into my fitness and go to the gym) that I go for runs frequently. This is far from true. Yes, I do a significant amount of cardio but running isn't always the most effective way to get into shape. Personally and truthfully, I can't run long distances at all. I've never been able to and I've just come to the conclusion that I'm not built for it as it hurts my legs, I get shin splints and I don't get very far before feeling as if my whole body is in strain. When I realised running wasn't really my thing I began to replace it with other forms of cardio, such as skipping, cross training and bike riding - they're just as effective.
Another reason why I don't run is because running long distances gets rid of a lot of the muscle mass in your body. I do a lot of weights working my glutes, quads and hamstrings, and I adore how toned they are at the moment so I'd hate for them to lessen from running.
ALTHOUGH. I do sprint. Usually I'll go for a speed walk, then sprint the first and last sets home (almost always on an incline) - I do this because I love the feeling for sprinting and personally, I find it more effective in achieving the body shape I like. Sprinting doesn't get rid of muscle, it actually helps to maintain it! If you don't believe me, look at some of the photos I've gathered of long distance runners - then look at the bodies of sprinters. Sprinters have toned abs, tones legs and asses to die for!
My main point is - don't judge your fitness levels on how long you can run for like how I used to. Find exercises that you're comfortable with and enjoy - because everyone is different and aspirer to achieve different things! If you are like me though, and would prefer to maintain your muscle mass and have a tighter body....SPRINT.
